Hunter • Blue By You

“I’ll never be blue. My dreams come true on Blue Bayou”. Linda Rondstadt

Blue By You lived a rock star life. He was beautiful, successful and adored by his fans. Born April 13, 1974, he was a dark bay thoroughbred with a blue sheen. Mr. William H. Moorhead bred ‘Blue’ but, upon the sudden passing of his owner, Blue was sent away at a young age to be sold.

Craig Collins managed the show stable of Sue Christiansen as her rider and trainer. Sue Duncan was riding and grooming for Craig when Blue arrived at the farm. It was love at first sight. Sue negotiated her first bank loan to become the owner of Blue By You. Blue was broke as a show hunter in his three-year-old year and took to the sport with ease. He had a beautiful, rhythmical canter and a natural balance that allowed him to step into the ring with confidence.

In 1979, as a four-year-old, Blue competed in the First Year Green Working division with Craig Collins as well as in the Amateur Owner division with Sue. He qualified for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in both divisions and was extremely successful. In his first year of showing, Blue became Reserve Zone Champion in the Green Working Hunter division. He was sold after the Royal to Mr. Jamie Gairdner.

Mr. Gairdner and Craig believed that Blue could be a successful jumper so they took him to Wellington, Florida. He was, however, destined to be a famous hunter. Top professionals such as Buddy Brown and Rodney Jenkins piloted Blue to championship after championship during the winter of 1980. Blue By You returned to Canada that spring and Craig showed him in the Second Year Working division with unparalleled success. Blue capped off that famous year with a clean sweep of the indoor circuit, becoming champion in Detroit, Harrisburg, Washington, New York and at Toronto’s Royal Winter Fair.

Few horses will be remembered as fondly as Blue By You for their outstanding performances on both sides of the border. He was a Canadian superstar and a dream come true.
