This week I am south of the border at that great five-week horse show known as the Vermont Summer Festival.  Even though I am not in Canada, I still find myself surrounded by my Canadian friends, including Angela Covert and Mike Lawrence.  Two of the nicest people in the business, the couple operate the training and sales business, Eastwood Equine Inc., just outside of Montreal and are 'regulars' at the Vermont Summer Festival.

There is a star rising in the west and her name is Tamie Phillips. When an ambitious young rider decides to take a run at entering the top ranks of show jumping, more often than not, their first step is to go out and buy a couple of horses in Europe.  Tamie Phillips took a different path - a dozen years ago she started a modest breeding program in northern British Columbia.  Defying the predictions of many members of the Canadian show jumping community, she has reached the upper echelons with her own homebred horses.

After two back-to-back weeks of show jumping in Blainville and Ottawa, you have to take your hat off to Mr. Eric Lamaze. Riding Hickstead, the 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion he has been named to the World Equestrian Games (WEG) Team with, Lamaze proved to be Sunday's best two weeks running.  In Blainville, he topped an eight-horse jump-off to take the $70,000 Grand Prix Jumping du Quebec World Cup Qualifier and, in Ottawa, he was his own toughest competition, winning the $60,000 'Kubota' Big Ben Memorial Grand Prix while also finishing runner-up with Ronaldo.  Conrad Homfeld, one of five course designers waiting to hear if he will get the job at the 2008 Olympic Games, built both courses.

In one of those situations where if you didn't laugh you'd cry, the Bromont International Three Day Event took place under rainy skies from June 8-11. Although sunny skies were reported in the surrounding area, the clouds hung over the site of the equestrian events at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

It is time to turn our attention to the world of dressage.  In eastern Canada, things got off to a strong start when the Ottawa Spring Dressage Classic held May 18-21 was a complete a sell-out.  Held at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, which also plays host the popular Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament in July, organizer Cara Whitham of Equivents, Inc. was booked solid by the time the closing date for entries had rolled around, leaving those who were not punctual with their entries out in the cold, or should we say, out in the rain.

Back at the Caledon Equestrian Park in Palgrave, ON, for the second straight week for the 'Caledon National' held May 17-21, competitors were ensured of consistency, especially where the weather was concerned.  Grand Prix Sunday marked the tenth straight day of rain, made even worse by the unseasonable appearance of snow.  But it takes more than a little snow to scare off the Canadians, and $50,000 in prize money did wonders to help warm their hearts - and fingers and toes.
