Quebec City Horse Show Makes Triumphant Return

September 29, 2004 – Quebec, Quebec – The Quebec City Horse Show, or Concurs Hippique de Quebec, is back with a new look and a new venue for 2004. Held October 7-11 at Expo Cite, the 2004 Quebec City Horse Show will be an indoor event featuring a wide array of hunter and show jumping competitions offering over $120,000 in prize money.

Show jumping highlights include Friday’s $10,000 Open Welcome and Saturday’s Young Horse competition for Four, Five and Six-Year-Olds. Saturday evening will feature the special $10,000 Francois Ferland Cup, held in honour of the internationally-respected judge who has officiated at every major championship event, including this summer’s Olympic Games in Athens, and is proud to call Quebec City home. On Sunday, the $50,000 Grand Prix du Quebec will take place at 3 p.m., followed by the ever-popular $5,000 Horse-Dog Relay. Hunter competition will also be featured daily, culminating on Monday with the $5,000 Hunter Classic.

In many ways, the 2004 Quebec City Horse Show signals a new era in show jumping. Just as he was 30 years ago when the Quebec City Horse Show first began, Robert Jolicoeur of Montreal, now one of only two Canadian course designers to hold his ‘O’ license from the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), will act as course designer. While Francois Ferland, Reine Jacob and Conrad Laurin were once the competitors, now they will now be acting as the officials. And eight-time Olympian Ian Millar, who also rode in Quebec City three decades ago, will see his children, Jonathon and Amy, now ride in the grand prix arena. Other well-known show jumping athletes scheduled to compete include Olympians Mac Cone, Hugh Graham, Jay Hayes, Beth Underhill and Quebec’s own Mario Deslauriers, as well as Laurie Bucci, Carly Campbell Cooper, Angela Covert, Lauren Hayes, Doug Henry, Jill Henselwood, Jennifer Jones, John Kersley, Greg Kuti, Eric Lamaze, Chris Pratt, Ainsley Vince and Keean White. International competitors include Yann Candele of France and Eric Flameng of Belgium.

“We are very pleased to bring the Concours Hippique de Quebec back to the jumping community with a new date and a new venue,” noted Jean Marc Bergevin, President of the Concours Hippique de Quebec who works closely with General Manager, Sylvain Deschamps. “The new format offers something for everyone, and I am sure both competitors and spectators alike will be pleased with the result.”

VIP Seating is available, and a Welcome Cocktail will be held on Saturday, October 10. With the Loews le Concorde as the official hotel, situated along Quebec’s famous ‘Grand Allee’ of restaurants, nightclubs and shops, there is plenty of action available to competitors when the horse show is over.
