Jenny Jones Captures Power and Speed at
CSI-W Blainville Jumping International

July 8, 2004 – Blainville, Quebec
– Jenny Jones of the United States jumped to the top of the standings in the Power and Speed competition at the CSI-W Blainville Jumping International held July 7-11 at the Blainville Equestrian Park in Blainville, QC.

Jones was the only rider able to master the power phase set by course designer Eugene Mathy of Belgium to advance to the speed phase, or immediate jump-off. Riding Lyon for owner Torrey Pines Stables of Schomberg, ON, Jones made it all the way to the final fence in the speed phase before having one rail to incur four faults in a time of 27.91 seconds.

Eric Flameng of Belgium had the only four-fault effort in the power phase, stopping the timers at 70.35 seconds riding Wasabi. Four-time Olympian Manuel Torres of Colombia had a refusal on course to incur four jumping and two time faults, but an otherwise clean jumping effort put him in third position riding Chambacunero.

Canada’s own John Kersley of Newington, ON, broke up the international domination with eight faults in a time of 68.52 seconds riding Aragon while Jones placed another horse in the top five, Ultime, for Canadian owner Michel Vaillancourt, the 1976 Individual Olympic Silver Medallist.

The Talent Squad competition, a means of identifying athletes with the potential to become future members of the Canadian Show Jumping Team, was also held in the grand prix ring on Thursday. It was an all-Quebec jump-off as Vanessa Paschini of Boisbriand, QC, and Laurie Bucci of St. Hilaire, QC, were the only two riders to advance. First to return in the jump-off, Bucci laid down a clear round in a time of 39.06 seconds riding Catesko. Paschini was not to be outdone however, jumping a second clear round in a time of 37.36 seconds to take the win.

Alexander Rohling of Navan, ON, and Secret Identity placed third while Carly Campbell Cooper of Elora, ON, placed fourth riding Croft Temptation, her 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding and Team Gold Medal partner at the 2003 North American Young Riders’ Championship.

A total of $145,000 in prize money is offered throughout the five-day tournament at the CSI-W Blainville Jumping International. In addition to the $60,000 Grand Prix Jumping du Quebec World Cup Qualifier held on Sunday, July 11, other feature classes include Friday’s $15,000 Open Welcome Stake and Saturday’s $20,000 Challenge Desjardins Modified Grand Prix.
